All About Millennials
This week’s show was all about Millennials (loosely defined as anyone born between 1980-1995). This generation has been called the Global Generation, Generation Next, and the Net Generation. Society labels this generation as confident, tolerant, narcissistic, civic-minded, and embody a sense of entitlement.
So, why Millennials? Well, starting in 2015, Millennials will make up the largest share of home purchasers in the USA! So, in a sense, Millennials have everything to do with the housing market.
We were joined with our special guest, Radio Personality, Terry J, from Power 96.1. Terry J is 29 years old, a graduate of LSU, and is full of personality. He shared his views on Talk Radio, student loan debt, unemployment, and the Millennial’s view of home buying.
He explained that talk radio is becoming increasingly popular with his generation as they get older and start to concern themselves with more “grown-up” issues.
We surprised Terry J by telling him and our listeners that the average student loan debt in America is a surprisingly low $33,000 and the average student loan debt in Georgia is an even lower $22, 000. Not only can this debt have a negative effect on an individual’s purchasing power, but the job market plays also a huge role.
Millennials are labeled selfish and unconcerned with home buying, but society seems to forget that Millennials have grown up during a hard economic time. They were not all presented with the “best” job prospects after finishing school, and, as Terry J pointed out, “One degree is not always enough in this dog eat dog world, we are having to compete for jobs with the older, more experienced generation.”
He expressed his personal view of his own generation in regards to the world and the housing market. “The American dream is still alive and kicking,” he responded when asked if he thought the Society’s opinion that Millennials are not concerned with purchasing homes. “They want a place that they can call their own, and they know that it is not their permanent home, they are looking to settle down and start a family. They are concerned with good school systems, low crime rate, and the commute…this all factors in our decision to buy a home”
Terry J also explained how his generation love information, and want to be informed home buyers. This is why The Sure Home Buying System and School Chimp perfect tools for this generation of new, information-craved homebuyers. Both of which can be found exclusively on our website.
Another important fact for any Millennials out there is that the difference between the average net worth of renters and buyer. The average net worth of a homeowner is $195,000, whereas the average renter’s net worth is a mere $5,000.
The U.S. government, based on tax laws, incentivizes homeowners. Homeownership is good for our country because it promotes stability, improves schools, and overall, homeownership is beneficial for everyone!
Looking forward to talking with Terry J again. He says that he will be coming through to shake up things with Cleve and Alfie in the near future.
